Hello All,

Our Deepest sympathy to Andy & Redeana Garcia whose 2 day old son, Seth, passed away today at Children’s Hospital.

Jimmy Malone preached at MCC again Wednesday evening. His sermon on resisting temptations was FANTASTIC. It’s good to hear such talent and see God use a young man. If you’d like a tape or DVD of the sermon, call Annette at 234-3225.
~~~~~
Claiborne Sharp came by the house Tuesday night. He’ll be back in a few weeks to install a new audio system in First Presbyterian here. They made the right choice. I like it when Magnolia people use professionals.
Shafting Nineveh
The Fate of Iraqi Christians
August 19, 2005
As if sectarian divisions and murderous insurgency weren’t enough, the drafters of Iraq’s new constitution have a new foe to worry about: Mother Nature. A recent meeting of the various factions drafting the document had to be postponed because of a blinding sandstorm. But that’s neither the only nor the most damaging storm likely to be associated with this constitution.
In fact, the more you know about the Iraqi constitutional process, the clearer three things become. First, Baghdad isn’t Philadelphia. Second, none of the people involved will ever be mistaken for James Madison. And third, the document that will emerge from these negotiations will bear little resemblance to the U.S. Constitution.
Nowhere will this be more obvious than in the area of religion. As Nathan Brown of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace recently said, the new constitution “will be fairly religious in coloration.”
By “religious” Brown means “Islamic.” The only question is whether this Islamic “coloration” is mostly symbolic or whether the drafters are trying to implement an “Islamic vision” of what a constitution ought to be. Brown sees signs of the latter, including appointing “religious figures to the constitutional court.”
Nina Shea of Freedom House isn’t that optimistic. She points out that the most recent draft of the constitution went from calling Islam “a source of law” to “the main source of law.” It also includes a “repugnancy clause” that says no law can “contradict Islam.”
Shea believes, with ample justification, that by “Islam” the drafters mean “Sharia law,” similar to that applied in places like Iran and Saudi Arabia. The efforts of those countries, combined with a possible “religious majority” in the parliament, might eventually turn Iraq into a de facto “Islamic Republic.”
You can see a glimpse of what they have in mind in the draft constitution. The rights of women are “explicitly tied to a proviso that it not violate Islamic Sharia.” And freedoms of speech, association and, most significantly, religion “are limited with the undefined phrase ‘in accordance with the law,’” presumably Sharia.
All of this spells trouble for Iraq’s 600,000 Christians. One man expected to wield power in the “new Iraq” is the Shiite leader, Ayatollah Sistani, who is often called a “moderate” in the press. While Sistani has urged “toleration” for Iraq’s Christians, he has also told his followers that “infidels are best to be avoided.” If this is “tolerance,” imagine what intolerance might be.
Actually, we don’t have to imagine. I’ve already told BreakPoint listeners about attacks on Iraqi Christians. As one Iraqi nun put it, “Christians live in constant fear of being attacked, kidnapped and killed by radical Islamic groups.”
Absent enforceable guarantees, the best Iraqi Christians can hope for is a modern version of dhimmitude, the second-class status accorded Christians and Jews in the old Islamic empires.
Shea is right when she insists, “No American blood should be spilt for the creation of a [Sharia] rule state.” We ought to insist that our leaders do whatever’s necessary to keep that from happening. And the least we owe our Christian brethren in Iraq is to protect them—and pray for them—from a storm we can clearly see coming.
This week, I continued my tour of Arkansas's Fourth Congressional District, attending events such as summer festivals, community office hours and welcoming home our men and women in uniform. All over Arkansas, children are returning to school, ready to embark on a new and exciting school year.
As the son of public school educators, I have always held a public school education in the highest regard. As parents, educators, and public officials, we have an obligation, a moral duty, to ensure that students, from pre-school to high school and beyond receive the highest quality education possible in order to provide them with the necessary tools they need to succeed in today's complex and technological world.
The most important component to our children's education is our teachers. Today more than ever, our educators face new obstacles and challenges. As my parents celebrate their retirement and lifetime of dedication to public education this weekend, I am once again struck with tremendous respect and gratitude for all educators and their personal commitment to our children.
By properly educating our students and providing them with the tools they need in order to become successful adults, we can ensure that Arkansas's students will be among the best and brightest in the country. In order to do this, we must provide our teachers with the resources and support they need. We must not forget, today's teachers shape the very foundation of Arkansas's future.
As your Representative in the United States Congress, I will work towards passing legislation that benefits our students and their educators. I hope you will join me in wishing both our students and teachers well as they begin the next year of their journey towards academic excellence and achievement.
Sincerely,
Congressman Mike Ross - Representing Arkansas's 4th District
The warden, addressing the three instigators of a failed prison riot, said, "I would like to know two things.
First: Why did you revolt?
Second: How did you get out of your cell?"
One of the three men stepped forward, "Warden, we rebelled because the food is awful."
"I see. And what did you use to break the bars?" the warden asked.
Replied the spokesman, "French Toast..."
In the admitting office of our hospital, some patients were filling out forms, others were being interviewed and still others were being escorted to their rooms.
An elderly woman hesitatingly entered my cubicle. She had completed her admitting forms and, upon my request, handed me her insurance cards. I typed the necessary information and then asked her the reason for her coming to the hospital.
"Just to visit a friend," she said, "but this had taken so long, I'm not sure I have time now."
I have a few notes I'd like to pass on to you...
1. I have a newborn son! He was about a month early, but everything is great and he's home with his proud parents. If you are interested, there is a few pictures and some more information about Brayden here: http://www.gcfl.net/Brayden/
2. Once again, the donation drive was a huge success! Thanks again for the generous support of everyone that donated. You're continued support as well as your kind words and comments continue to encourage me to improve GCFL.net.
[GCFL.net] For All Those Born Before 1945
Consider all the changes we have witnessed .....
We were born before television, before penicillin, before polio shots, before frozen foods, plastics, Xerox, contact lens, Frisbees and the PILL.
We were born before radar, credit cards, split atoms, laser beams, and ballpoint pens, and before panty hose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, air conditioners, drip-dry clothes and before man walked on the moon. We got married first and then lived together. How quaint can you be? In out time closets were for clothes, not coming out of. Bunnies were small rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens. Designer Jeans were scheming girls named Jean or Jeannie, and having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousin.
We thought fast food was what you ate during Lent, and outer Space was the back of Loews Theatre. We were born before house-husbands, gay rights, computer dating, and dual careers. We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, electric typewriters, artificial hearts, word processors, or guys wearing ear rings. For us time sharing meant togetherness and hardware and software weren't even words.
In 1939 "made in Japan" meant junk and the term "making out" referred to how you did on your exam. Pizzas, MacDonalds and instant coffee were unheard of. We hit the scene when there were 5 and 10 cent stores, where you bought things for 5 and 10 cents. For a nickel you could ride on the street car, make a phone call, but a Pepsi or enough stamps to mail one letter or 2 post cards, and gas for your car (if you had one) was 11 cents a gallon.
In our day GRASS was mowed, COKE was a cold drink, and POT was something you cooked in. ROCK MUSIC was Grandma's lullaby and AIDS were helpers in the Principal's office. We were certainly not before the differences between the sexes was discovered, but were surely before the sex change. And, we were the last generation that was so dumb as to think you needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder we are so confused and there is such a generation gap today.
BUT WE SURVIVED!!!
Bible Brain Twister By John Kezer
I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts, and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books are not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of the 17, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are the names of 17 books of the Bible in these sentences.
One preacher found 16 books in 20 minutes. It took him three weeks to find the seventeenth one.
(Hint: See how many books of the bible you can find in the text above.)
Jogging Time
A man had been driving all night and by morning was still far from his destination. He decided to stop at the next city he came to, and park somewhere quiet so he could get an hour or two of sleep.
As luck would have it, the quiet place he chose happened to be on one of the city's major jogging routes. No sooner had he settled back to snooze when there came a knocking on his window. He looked out and saw a jogger running in place.
"Yes?"
"Excuse me, sir," the jogger said, "do you have the time?"
The man looked at the car clock and answered, "8:15".
The jogger said thanks and left. The man settled back again, and was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window and another jogger.
"Excuse me, sir, do you have the time?"
"8:25!"
The jogger said thanks and left. Now the man could see other joggers passing by and he knew it was only a matter of time before another one disturbed him. To avoid the problem, he got out a pen and paper and put a sign in his window saying, "I do not know the time!"
Once again he settled back to sleep. He was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window.
"Sir, sir? It's 8:45!."
Perfect Spouse
A young lady visited a computer dating service and requested, "I'm looking for a spouse. Can you please help me to find a suitable one?"
The matchmaker said, "What exactly are you looking for?"
"Well, let me see. Needs to be good looking, polite, humorous, sporty, knowledgeable, good at singing and dancing. Willing to accompany me the whole day at home during my leisure hour if I don't go out. Be able to tell me interesting stories when I need a companion for conversation and be silent when I want to rest."
The matchmaker entered the information into the computer and, in a matter of moments, handed the results to the woman.
The results read, "Buy a television."
Head Check
One weekend my friend Sally, a nurse, was looking after her six-year-old nephew when he fell off a playground slide and hit his head.
Worried that he might have a concussion, she checked him all night. Every hour, she'd gently shake him and ask, "What's your name?" Soon, he began moaning in protest each time she entered the room.
When Sally went in at 5:00 A.M., she found something white on his forehead. Leaning close, she saw a crayon-scrawled message taped to his forehead.
It read: "My name is Daniel."
"More than half of all Americans test positive in response to one or more allergens, double the percentage who did 30 years ago, a new study reports. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that 54% of people tested positive to at least one of 10 allergens. The highest response was to dust mites, 27.5%. The lowest was to peanuts, 8.6%. The findings appear in the August issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Researchers analyzed data from skin-prick allergy tests on 10,500 people by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
"The internet is an important element in the overall educational experience of many teenagers. Schools are a common location where online teens access the web, although very few online teenagers rely exclusively on their school for that web access. Further, there is widespread agreement among teens and their parents that the internet can be a useful tool for school. However, 37% of teens say they believe that “too many” of their peers are using the internet to cheat. And there is some disagreement among teens and their parents about whether children must be web-literate by the time they begin school. Additionally, large numbers of teens and adults have used the web to search for information about colleges and universities. The most recent Pew Internet Project survey finds that 87% of all youth between the ages of 12 and 17 use the internet. That translates into about 21 million people. Of those 21 million online teens, 78% (or about 16 million students) say they use the internet at school. Put another way, this means that 68% of all teenagers have used the internet at school." - Source
"A new survey conducted for Bankers Life and Casualty Company reveals Portland, Ore. is the best city in the United States for senior living with Seattle, San Francisco, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh rounding out the top five. A panel of experts on gerontology and senior issues identified the qualities for optimal senior living. Major categories were: health, disease, economics, social, environment, spiritual, transportation, housing, and crime. Each category was statistically weighted to reflect the needs of the senior population. 'We find the survey results contain some cities we don't often associate with senior living,' said Bankers' Chief Operating Officer Scott Perry. 'That's because we weren't looking for the best places to be retired, but the best cities for seniors regardless of whether they are retired, working, active or non, healthy or not. "When daylight-saving time starts earlier than usual in the United States come 2007, your VCR or DVD recorder could start recording shows an hour late. Cell phone companies could give you an extra hour of free weekend calls, and people who depend on online calendars may find themselves late for appointments. An energy bill President Bush is to sign August 8, 2005, would start daylight time three weeks earlier and end it a week later as an energy-saving measure. And that has technologists worried about software and gadgets that now compensate for daylight time based on a schedule unchanged since 1987. 'It is unfortunately going to add a little bit of complexity to consumers,' said Reid Sullivan, vice president of the entertainment group at Panasonic Consumer Electronics Co. 'In some cases, depending on the product, they may have to manually increase or decrease the time.' " - Source
The findings are a step forward but do not overcome the major hurdle of producing enough vaccine to meet demand in the event of a flu pandemic, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The vaccine is grown in chicken eggs and production can take months. Fauci said early analysis of tests in healthy adults under age 65 showed the vaccine, which is made by French company Sanofi-Aventis, produced a strong immune response." - Source
"High levels of physical activity, such as running, swimming or heavy gardening during leisure time can reduce your risk of stroke, according to a study reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. In addition, walking or biking to and from work for up to 29 minutes a day may also reduce the risk of strokes caused by a blood clot (ischemic stroke). 'People should increase their physical activity during leisure time or commuting to lower the risk of stroke,' said lead investigator Gang Hu, Ph.D., senior researcher in the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion at the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland. The study is the first to find an inverse association between leisure-time physical activity and the risk of any stroke -- ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding from a vessel on the surface of the brain into the space between the brain and the skull), or intracerebral hemorrhage (bleeding inside the brain)." - Source
Having worked at the plant for several years I have seen many incidents.. Thought I would share a few which have happened through the years. Still talk about some of these at times in tailgate meetings, etc., because they could easily happen again if we don't keep our awareness high.
(1) We trained a fellow to move 6m gallon trailers around the plant. Thought we trained him pretty well and he was capable of backing trailers, etc. We turned him loose and he was proud as a peacock. His first assignment was to move a trailer from the south drum packaging shed. He hooked the tractor to the trailer, removed chocks, hooked up his air brakes and proceeded down the road. As I said, he was proud driving alone, and as he was going down the road, people were yelling and waving at him. He blew the air horn, waved back and kept on rolling. Someone finally stopped him--he had not disconnected the line from the pump and the trailer was dragging the pump, etc. down the road behind him.
(2) Or the fellow who backed up the empty 6m gallon trailer to the wash rack, went through all the motions, put on air brakes, chocked trailer; man he was good. Disconnected the 5th wheel and pulled out from under the trailer. Oops, looked like an atomic bomb when it hit dirt. He forgot one minor detail, putting the landing gear down on the trailer.
(3) And the fellow making and drumming blends (I wonder who this could be) and hurried down to the blend tank in the pickup, got out of the pickup, hurried over to the hyster, took some drums off the line and backed the hyster into the pickup truck.
Let us keep our awareness high, it seems like awkward moments can sneak upon you when you lose focus.
Cell Phone Use Quadruples Car Crash Risk
---------------------------
And it doesn't matter whether drivers use handheld or hands-free models, study finds Robert Preidt
TUESDAY, July 12 (HealthDay News) -- Drivers distracted by cell phone conversations quadruple their risk of a serious accident, according to new research out of Australia.
The University of Sydney study also found that hands-free mobile phones are no safer than handheld mobile phones while driving.
Researchers analyzed data on 456 drivers who owned or used mobile phones and had been in a traffic crash resulting in injuries requiring hospitalization.
As part of the study, they interviewed the drivers and used phone company records to assess their mobile phone use immediately before the crash and during trips occurring at roughly the same time of day 24 hours, three days, and seven days before the crash. This meant, in effect, that researchers could compare crash risks in the same driver at the same time of day, with the only difference being whether or not they were using their cell phone.
Reporting Tuesday in the on-line edition of the British Medical Journal, they found that cell phone use occurring in the 10 minutes prior to a crash was linked to a quadrupled risk of having an accident. The researchers also found similar results for the interval of up to five minutes before a crash.
This link between mobile phone use and increased crash risk held true irrespective of driver age, sex, or whether or not he or she was using a hands-free mobile phone, the researchers added in a prepared statement.
FRIDAY'S EDITORIAL By T&D Staff
10 reasons to slow down on the road
THE ISSUE: The toll from speeding
OUR OPINION: Saving lives and dollars among key reasons to slow down
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration this summer gave South Carolinians more bad news about their driving. Only Kansas, Rhode Island and Connecticut had a higher percentage of fatal accidents attributed to speed in 2002.
And things are not looking good for 2005.
With speeding long considered a top factor in accidents ? along with driver inattention and driving under the influence ? there seems little doubt that all three factors are playing a role in seeing South Carolina's death rate climb. Through the weekend of Aug. 7, 649 people had died on the state's roads this year. That compares to 615 a year ago.
In Orangeburg County, 32 people have died so far. That's eight more than a year ago.
Motorists have been asked to buckle seat belts as a leading tool against being killed. Now, we're joining Autobytel Inc. in urging drivers to "Take the Pledge to Slow Down."
And here are 10 good reasons listed for doing so:
1. Because summer is the most fatal time on America's roads. 13,000 Americans are killed in traffic accidents from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
2. To save lives. Higher speeds mean more accidents and more fatalities ? period. Overall, about a third of all fatal motor vehicle accidents involve at least one driver who was speeding.
3. To save your own life. If you're traveling 10 mph above the average speed on the road, you're six times more likely to be involved in a crash. The chances of death or serious injury double for every 10 mph over 50 mph a vehicle travels. A frontal impact, for example, at 35 mph is a third more severe than one at 30 mph.
4. To save gas. The faster you drive, the more fuel you burn. At speeds above 55 mph, fuel economy plummets rapidly. Slowing down from 65 to 55 increases your gas mileage by roughly 20 percent.
5. To avoid expensive tickets. The average cost of a speeding ticket, with court fees, runs $150. The average insurance increase over three years after a speeding ticket runs roughly $300.
6. Tougher speeding crackdowns. Excessive speed has become a top priority in 2005 for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the government is pushing for high-visibility enforcement.
7. Because speeding doesn't save that much time. Speeding, with the goal of making up time on the road, has a surprisingly small payback. A driver traveling 20 miles in a 60 mph zone saves only 1.5 minutes by going 65 ? 2.9 minutes by going 70 ? 4 minutes speeding at 75 mph ? 5 minutes at 80 mph ? and 5.9 minutes speeding at 85 mph. Do the math for your own commute.
8. Because speeding wastes money and lives. The human cost of speeding-related fatalities is inestimable, but the actual dollar cost can be neatly quantified: Americans spent $40.3 billion on accidents involving excessive speed last year. To give some perspective, $40.3 billion is about 60 percent more money than the combined Group of Eight (G-8) nations currently spends on economic aid to Africa.
9. Because speeding isn't a "big-city" problem. Nearly 60 percent of fatal crashes occur on two-lane, undivided roads, and rural local roads are five times as dangerous as urban interstates. Rural citizens, meanwhile are 2-1/2 times as likely to be killed on highways than their urban counterparts. Overall, the fatality rate on local roads is more than three times the rate on interstates.
10. Because speeding contributes to road rage. Summer driving means chaotic, congested roads, scorching temperatures, and screaming kids. Throw speeding into the mix and you're contributing to that growing American crime: road rage. Since 1990, traffic accidents involving violence have increased 7 percent each and every year.
Handling 55-Gallon Drums Safely
In the typical workplace drums are used to store material, to ship it, to dispense it for use, and to store wastes. All these drums must be moved from time to time. Like most things, there's a right way to move a drum-and several wrong ways to do it.
At least four serious injuries can occur if a drum is not handled safely:
fractures, lacerations, hernias, back strain
All these injuries are painful and require a long time to heal. By taking a few precautions before you attempt to move a drum, you can help prevent these serious and painful injuries. Before you move a drum, put on a pair of thick gloves. The gloves will help protect your hands. Also follow this preliminary checklist:
Check to see how much room there is to move the drum.
Plan your route in advance. Don't wait until the drum is in motion.
Check the route for anything that might cause you or your equipment to trip or slip.
Check the drum to make sure it isn't warped. This could cause the drum to slip.
Check the drum for burrs which could cause a laceration.
Check the drum for liquids which could cause you to lose your grip.
Check the bung to make sure it is tight enough to prevent leaks.
If you are moving the drum using a pallet, make sure the pallet is in good condition.
There are four ways to "break," or initially move a drum from its standing position. These are pulling, pushing, or combinations of pulling and pushing, the drag/pull method and the push/pull method. Pulling is necessary when drums are grouped closely together. Pushing is used when there is ample room to work. The drag/pull method is used when there are tight spots in the area you are "breaking" the drum. The push/pull method is used when drums are located beside a wall.
To pull the drum, grip the near chime with one hand and the far chime with the other. Brace your foot at an angle across the bottom chime. Your hands and feet should form a straight line. Check the position of your fingers for possible pinch points. Now you are ready to pull back on the drum.
To push the drum, place your hands near the chime at shoulder width. Move your shoulders low and close to the drum. Slowly push forward with your legs until you feel the drum reach its balance point.
When using the drag/pull method, place your hands at the near position at shoulder width. Brace the drum with your foot to prevent it from sliding, and shift your weight to the rear foot. Pull and drag it a few inches to the left then to the right.
To use the push/pull method, use one hand to pull the far chime. Use the other hand to push against the wall.
If a drum starts to fall, get away from it as quickly as possible. If the contents spill, follow your worksite's procedures for reporting a spill..
If two people are moving a drum, both people can push the drum, pull the drum, or one can push while the other pulls. When rolling the drum, it is safer for one person to roll it.
To roll a drum, in this case to the left, follow these steps:
Place your left hand high on the chime and your right hand low.
Use both hands to roll the drum.
As your right hand reaches the top, quickly switch the left hand to the top position.
Lift your hands and place them into position. Do not slide your hands because you may cut or burn them.
Keep your feet separated and do not slide them. Use the side step..
Turn your body slightly away from the drum, but not too far away.
Stay close and ahead of the drum.
When you reach your destination, place the drum in its position using the reverse of the push, pull, drag/pull, or push/pull method.
TODAY'S TOURBUS TOPIC: Cheap Gas / Windows Update
Howdy, y'all, and greetings once again from deep behind the orange curtain in beautiful Irvine, California, America's number one selling pretzel.
+-------------------------------------------------+
Cheap Gas
Audience: Anyone in America with an Automobile
----------------------------------------------
Now that a barrel of oil is almost [but not quite] as expensive as a barrel of printer ink, today's post is going to show you some ways to save money the next time you fill up your gas tank in the United States. Obviously, the easiest way to save money during this energy crisis [or "price instability" or whatever we're calling it this week] is to stop using private transportation altogether. Most municipalities have wonderful mass transit systems that are both efficient and cheap. Just do a Google search for the name of your city plus the words "mass transit" for more information about all of the public transportation options that are available to you.
RELATED LINK: http://www.tourbus.com/gas-prices-news.html
RELATED LINK: http://www.tourbus.com/mass-transit-news.html
However, living in Southern California where the automobile is a part of our culture, giving up my automobile just isn't feasible. [Try mapping a bus route from John Wayne Airport to Cal State Long Beach, a distance of only 20 miles, and you'll see what I mean.] For us crazy Californians -- and I'm willing to bet the same is true for most Americans -- what we really need is a way to comparison shop for gasoline, to find the cheapest gas prices before we get in the car and head to the pumps.
Fortunately, there are a BUNCH of gasoline price comparison sites on the internet. The biggest is the American Automobile Association's "AAA Fuel Price Finder" at
http://aaa.opisnet.com/
Key in your state and city or your zip code, choose a search area radius of three, five, or ten miles, and click on the "Search" button and the site shows you a list of gas stations in your area and the prices they are charging for regular, mid-grade, and premium gasoline.
The American Automobile Association compiles their pricing data from credit card transactions at more than 85,000 outlets around the country as well as direct feeds from individual chains. The site displays the last price received over the past 7 days at each location...
From http://aaa.opisnet.com/Methodology.aspx
Here in Irvine, self-serve regular ranges from ~$2.72 to ~$2.88 per gallon. That doesn't sound like too much of a price difference, but by going to the cheapest gas station instead of the most expensive I can save almost $2.40 each and every time I fill up.
While the American Automobile Association gets its pricing information directly from the source, several new sites have popped up recently that get their pricing data directly from consumers like you and me. These sites include, in alphabetical order:
http://www.fuelmeup.com/main.php
http://gasbuddy.com/
http://www.gaspricewatch.com/new/
To be completely honest, none of these sites knock my socks off. Someone recently combined http://www.gaspricewatch.com/ with Google Maps to create
http://www.ahding.com/cheapgas/
but even that isn't as accurate as the AAA Fuel Price Finder. But that's just my opinion.
Another source for up-to-date gasoline price information is your local media. With gasoline prices skyrocketing recently, most local television stations, radio stations, and newspapers regularly compile lists of the cheapest local gasoline prices. Just head on over to
http://dir.yahoo.com/
and search for the name of your town and the word "media." At the very top of the search results page, under the words "Related Directory Categories," click on the "News and Media" link for your hometown. This shows you links to all of the media outlets, and one of them probably has gasoline prices posted on their website.
I hope this helps!
Windows Update
Audience: All Windows Users
---------------------------
Microsoft normally releases critical updates on the second Tuesday of each month, and this past Tuesday's update was a doozie. In fact, there is already a worm making its way through the Internet looking for systems that don't have one of Tuesday's patches [see http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?date=2005-08-14 ]
RELATED LINK: http://www.tourbus.com/windows-updates-news.html
Fortunately, patching your system is pretty easy: Just run Windows Update. [In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Windows Update and follow the on-screen prompts.] Be prepared to restart your computer once all of the patches are installed. [Hey, I told you it was a doozie.]
+-------------------------------------------------+
That's it for today. Have a safe and happy week, and we'll talk again soon.
Indoor Air Quality
Clean and Vacuum Your Way to a Healthy Home
Home sweet home. It's where our heart is, and where we spend most of our time. Naturally, we want it to be free from unhealthy influences.
As we look increasingly to our homes as havens from a stressful world, the issue of indoor air quality has never been more critical. Today's homes boast tight construction, and that's appealing from the standpoint of warmth as well as energy conservation. But they also can be breeding grounds for unhealthy entities that remain trapped inside - bacteria, dirt, mold, dust mites, pollens and other allergens. Most are so small, they can't be seen with the naked eye.
According to health experts, these indoor pollutants can manifest themselves in symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, nasal congestion, headaches, tiredness, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. In fact, 40 to 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. An estimated 17.3 million suffer from asthma.
Is it possible to cure a "sick" home?
Medical experts say that keeping a clean home can make a significant difference. Thorough and regular vacuuming is an important part of that regimen according to such credible authorities as the American Lung Association, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Today's vacuum cleaners have been designed with a focus on filtration technology to address Indoor Air Quality issues. Not only are they efficient at picking up dirt from the floor, but their allergen filtration or HEPA filtration systems are designed to retain minute particles so that they don't get back out into the air. Regular vacuuming can also help control animal dander, spiders, spider egg sacs and webs.
Deep cleaning or extracting goes hand-in hand with vacuuming. The use of specially formulated liquid cleaning solutions for extractors can help loosen and remove allergens that cling to carpet fibers.
These vacuuming tips can contribute to the thorough cleaning that makes a Healthier home:
Vacuum carpet and rugs at least once a week.
Vacuum twice a week in bedrooms and high-traffic areas.
Vacuum upholstered furniture, drapes and mattresses on a regular basis
Vacuum more frequently if you have pets.
Other tips, to be used in tandem with vacuum cleaning:
Wash bedding in hot water - at least 130 degrees F
Encase bedding in special allergen-control covers
Wash stuffed animals
Control moisture in the home to prevent mold spores by maintaining relative humidity below 55 percent through appropriate use of heating, air conditioning and a dehumidifier.
Clean appropriate hard surfaces with a damp cloth
Keep windows closed if you wish to keep allergens from the outside from entering.
Control cockroaches; their feces are an allergen
And you have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots.
Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible.
No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq.
Verse of the Day
“But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. Genesis 6:18 (NASB95)
“I wouldn’t date you if you were the last man on earth!” she screamed.
The fact of today’s discussion is that Noah WAS the last RIGHTEOUS man on earth! God knew that … He had walked the earth looking into each man’s heart. The only flash of hope came in the form of Noah … and his family. What is interesting is that God thought so much of Noah that He chose to do something He had never done before. He desired to cut covenant with our hero. This is the first time the word “covenant” is used in the Bible accounts, so it must be significant. Let’s take a look at the concept.
A covenant was a legal action signified by an action; in the case of Noah, the covenant was sealed with the act of entering the ark. The legal action indicated the acceptance of a contract between two individuals or other entities. The major Old Testament covenants all involved God and a particular man. Invariably, the OT covenants were heavy on the God side: “I will establish My covenant …” with lesser responsibilities on the man side, often: “… you shall be my people …” In short, God’s covenants tended to be rather unilateral with God giving the most and asking little in return. Later, after the flood waters had receded, God re-established the covenant and sealed it with one of the things that still brings awe to people the world over: the rainbow.
Now that we understand the rudimentary concepts of “covenant”, we may be asking, “So what does that mean to me?” To answer, I will ask you a few questions … don’t worry; I’ll try to provide the answers as well. Why did God choose Noah? That question we have already answered: Noah was the sole righteous man on earth.
How did it happen that he was the only one? Before and during Noah’s time, the angels and mankind could intermingle … and the angels took a liking to human women. The result was a “super human” race that seemed to seek independence from all restraint. I suspect that the “angels” that did the interacting were mostly “fallen angels” because of the result. The fallen angels had already shown a propensity to rebel … and they passed that nature on to the women they cohabited with and then the children of that union. In short, mankind had come to a point in which they didn’t care what God thought thus evil prevailed upon the face of the earth.
How did Noah escape that fallen state? The answer probably lies in his linage. From the statement that Noah’s father made upon Noah’s birth, it can be surmised that Lamech had some knowledge and understanding of righteousness for he said, “This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed.” (Genesis 5:29) It seems that Lamech did a poor job of raising the rest of his children, but Noah was indeed a savior of sorts. He had been imparted from his father sufficient information to remain righteous in spite of the culture in which he lived.
Why did God not just wipe out the earthlings and start over? That’s a good question which is probably answered in a way similar to Abraham’s pleas for Sodom and Gomorrah. “Lord, if there are just ten righteous, will you save the city?” God’s mercy is evident in the choosing of Noah. He could not justify wiping out all mankind when there was one who remained true. If Noah had been evil to the core like all the rest, history would have been written differently. But Noah was righteous … and God wanted to build a relationship with him, thus the covenant … the building of a relationship between God and a man.
What does this mean to me … and you? God doesn’t give up on people. He longs to restore the relationship He had with Adam. If there is any righteousness … any hope of righteousness … any glimmer or spark or remotest possibility of righteousness, God will not give up. He will try, and try, and try, and try until the individual in question has breathed his last.
As God built a relationship with Noah, He longs to build a relationship with you and me. He has cut covenant with us, and that covenant is found in Jesus Christ. As usual, God paid the full redemption cost; we need only accept the offer!
Blameless
--------------------------------
Monday, August 15, 2005
by Os Hillman
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. ~ Psalm 84:11
If you were running for political office, what approach would your opponent take against you? If he wanted to launch a smear campaign, would there be any ammunition for him to use? Think how you would feel if the director of the opposing campaign came to you afterwards and said, "Sir, we tried to find something negative to play up in our campaign against you, but we couldn't."
What does it really mean to be a person who is blameless before God? Being blameless before God does not mean we are perfect. No human being is perfect. It means that we so fully trust in God that we are willing to make things right when we fail. We are willing to humble ourselves continually before the throne of God. "...Blessed is the man who trusts in You" (Psalm 84:12). God has a specific plan for the people who fully trust in Him. He promises to be their shield, to bestow honor on them. He will not withhold any good thing from them. What a promise! What motivation to be all that we can be in God.
Imagine living a life that God views as blameless, which allows Him to withhold no good thing. Pray that God would make you and me that kind of person.
Rejected for Christ
And they took offense at Him.... ~ Matthew 13:57
Jesus taught in the synagogue in the community He grew up in. He was raised as a local carpenter's son. No one saw any miraculous powers in this young boy's life. But something changed as He became older. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" Those in the community could not reconcile God's work in someone they thought they knew simply as the carpenter's son. God brings every person who is committed to Him out of their normal routine into a new revelation of Himself that impacts others.
Is the move of God so evident in your life that it invites scrutiny from friends or coworkers? Jesus confronted the issues of His day without fear of being rejected. A life of obedience will be an affront to the systems of this world. When God begins His deeper work in you, it will be a stumbling block to those around you. When you are rejected for Christ, consider that Christ is affirming His call on your life and you are becoming a threat to the kingdom of darkness. How many of satan's workers do you suppose have been assigned to thwart God's activity in your life? Those who sit in a pew from week to week and never speak the name of Christ in the workplace require few opponents because they represent no threat to the kingdom of darkness.
How are you impacting the kingdom of darkness? God has called you and me to impact the lives around us for His Kingdom. Your words may be an affront to those around you; do not fear this. God will use your words and life to draw others to Himself. You are His ambassador in the workplace. He has placed you there for this time to extend life to those who live in darkness.
Mixing Faith With Commerce
"Your servant has nothing there at all," she said, "except a little oil." ~ 2 Kings 4:2b
Her husband had died. There was no way to fulfill her debts. Her creditors decided to take her two sons as slaves for payment of the obligations that still remained. She pleaded for assistance with the only man of God she knew.
"Is there anything in your house?" Elisha asked.
"Nothing at all," she said, "except a little oil."
Elisha then instructed her to go and collect all the empty jars that her neighbors might possess. "Ask for as many as you can," he instructed.
When the jars were collected, he instructed her to pour what little oil she had into the jars. The oil was more than enough to fill the jars. In fact, there was more oil than jars to fill. "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left" (2 Kings 4:7b).
God often mixes faith with the tangible. The widow believed she had no resources to meet her need. God said she had more than enough resources. She did not see the one jar of oil as a resource. It did not become a resource until it was mixed with faith. Her need was met when her faith was mixed with the practical step of going into the workplace to sell what she had in order to receive her needed income. In fact, there was so much income she was able to pay her debts and live on the money derived from the sale.
Quite often we forget that God works through commerce to provide for our needs. It is wrong to place total trust in commerce without faith in God. God often requires simple obedience to an act that seems ridiculous to the logical mind. It is this faith mixed with the practical that God honors.
Do you have a problem that is perplexing to you? Do you see no way of meeting your need? God may have already given you the skills and talents to meet your need. However, He may be waiting for you to mix them with faith. Ask God to show you the steps necessary to solve your problem. Be willing to take the next step.
The Response of Faith
..."Everything is all right".... ~ 2 Kings 4:26
The prophet Elisha often would travel through the town of Shunem, and in that town was a well-to-do couple who extended hospitality to him. At first, they simply offered Elisha a meal when he came through town. Then, seeing that Elisha needed a place to stay and study, they built a room for him above their house so that each time he came through town, he had a place to stay. He was so appreciative of their kindness that one day he asked the wife what he could do for her. His servant Gehazi later informed Elisha that the woman was barren and her husband was old. " 'About this time next year,' Elisha said, 'you will hold a son in your arms' " (2 Kings 4:16). A year later the son arrived.
One day the father was working in the field, and the son became ill and died. The woman ran to meet Elisha to inform him. When Elisha asked what was wrong, she did not panic and react in fear. Her response to Elisha seemed almost unnatural. "Everything is all right," she said. Elisha went to the boy and raised him from the dead. It was a glorious miracle. (See Second Kings 4.)
Faith looks at situations through God's eyes, not the eyes of our limited understanding. This woman did not panic, for she knew something more than the current circumstance. Faith does not panic, but realizes that what looks like devastating circumstances may be God's plan to bring glory to Himself by demonstrating His power. When Jesus appeared on the water to the disciples in the middle of the night, they exclaimed, "It's a ghost!" (see Mt. 14:26) First appearances can bring great fear upon us even to the point of paralyzing us. Find the Lord in your circumstance today. Exercise your faith today and trust Him for His outcome in the situation.
Overcoming All Odds
..."Because you have prayed to Me...." ~ Isaiah 37:21
Have you ever had your back against the wall so badly that if something didn't happen to change your situation, you were sunk? King Hezekiah was one of Israel's greatest godly kings. One of the greatest challenges to his reign came when the king of Assyria threatened to attack Israel and wipe them out. The Assyrians were the local bullies of the region and had wiped out all other enemies in their region.
They mocked the idea of having a God who could save them.
Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you! Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, "The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria" (Isaiah 36:14b-15).
The workplace is full of "Assyrian kings" who mock the idea of a living God who delivers. Without God's help, Israel would not overcome. Their backs were against the wall. They would be destroyed.
King Hezekiah saved Israel because of one act. He prayed; and because he prayed, God moved on his behalf. In fact, God moved so powerfully that Hezekiah did not even have to fight the battle.
Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies! (Isaiah 37:36)
The king of Assyria was even murdered by his own sons. Imagine seeing your enemy totally destroyed without one hand raised in battle!
God wants to act on behalf of His children if they will call on Him. One of the motives Hezekiah had in seeking God's help was "so that all kingdoms on earth may know that You alone, O Lord, are God" (Is. 37:20). This is what happened. God was glorified.
God wants to let your workplace know that God is a living God. He can deliver. Seek Him today for the crisis in your life. Keep your motive pure and God will surely answer.
